GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Wisconsin women’s hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie against the University of North Dakota at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D., on Sunday afternoon. UND went on to win the shootout, 2-1, in four rounds to take the extra point for conference standings.
The tie moves Wisconsin to 20-2-2 (14-2-2-1 WCHA) on the season, while North Dakota is now 13-8-2 (9-7-2-1 WCHA). The Badgers remain in first place with a five-point lead over second-place Minnesota.
Wisconsin was assessed its most penalties in a single game this season, serving a total of 12 penalties for 35 minutes.
Sophomore goaltender Alex Rigsby made a total of 46 stops in the contest, including 27 while on the penalty kill.
UW jumped out to an early lead thanks to the trio of Carolyne Prévost, Brianna Decker and Brooke Ammerman. Just 42 seconds after the opening puck drop, Ammerman and Decker combined to feed Prévost a back-door pass to put the Badgers up 1-0.
However, Decker’s game would be cut short after being called for a checking from behind penalty at the 18:36 mark of the opening period. Fortunately, the Badgers killed off the five minute major that overlapped the first and second periods.
Prévost tallied a second goal to put Wisconsin up 2-0. Though, Monique Lamoureux-Kolls would respond for the North Dakota scoring two consecutive goals to tie the game at 2-2.
Taking back the momentum, the Badgers used goals from Prévost and Ammerman to take back a two-goal lead.
A string of penalties against the Badgers late in the third period would allow North Dakota the chance it needed to get back into the game. Michelle Karvinen scored with less than seven minutes left to cut the Badgers lead to one. Andrea Dalen then used an extra attacker to score with 32 seconds remaining in the third period to tie the game at 4-4.
The overtime period went scoreless as the game officially ended in a draw. North Dakota’s Lamoureux-Kolls and Jocelyne Lamoureux scored in the shootout to edge Wisconsin 2-1 in four rounds. Hilary Knight was the lone scorer in the shootout for Wisconsin.
The Badgers return home to the Kohl Center next weekend for a series against Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 20-21. Both games begin at 2 p
