Player of the Game
Senior Alyssa Karel scored a game-high 24 points, including 14 in the second half, to record her eighth 20-plus scoring game of the season. The 5-7 guard was 10-of-23 from the field, including 1-of-5 from 3-point range. Her 3-pointer came with 11 seconds remaining and pulled the Badgers within two points (60-48). Karel also added three rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal in 35 minutes of play.
Play of the Game
With 7:06 left in the game, Lin Zastrow tipped in an offensive rebound while in midair to tie the score at 46. The 6-4 post finished with 18 points and a team-leading six rebounds. She also dished off three assists.
Stat of the Game
Illinois State went 20-of-23 (.870) from the free throw line as the Badgers were called for 20 fouls. Wisconsin shot just 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the line as the Redbirds were called for 17 fouls. UW's free throw percentage was its lowest since shooting 55 percent (11-of-20) at Michigan State on Jan. 6.
Turning Point
With 7:06 remaining, the score was tied at 46 before Illinois State went on a 9-0 run to take a 55-46 lead with 3:51 to play. Emily Hanley scored five points for the Redbirds, including a 3 pointer with 5:37 left, to key the run.
Notables
Wisconsin's season ends at 16-15 overall and in the second round of the WNIT. The Badgers made their fifth consecutive postseason appearance in 2010-11.
Today's game was the last of the careers for seniors Alyssa Karel, Emily Neal, Tara Steinbauer and Lin Zastrow.
Karel ends her career with 1,476 points, which ranks 12th on the UW career list. She also finishes 10th in field goal attempts (1,366), sixth in 3-point field goals made (162), sixth in 3-point field goals attempted (460), ninth in 3-point percentage (.352) and tied for third in games played (124).
Zastrow wraps up her career with 1,033 points, which ranks 20th all time. She is also seventh in career blocks (108) and ninth in games played (122).
Steinbauer, who's season ended a month ago with a torn ACL, wraps up her career with 964 points and 599 rebounds. She played in 118 games, including 111 consecutive, which ranks eighth on the UW record list. Steinbauer also started 89 games, including 63 straight, which ties for 10th all time.
Neal , a transfer from Colorado State, played two years at Wisconsin. She played in 42 games in the Cardinal and White, starting one game. She averaged 1.3 points and 0.7 rebounds as a Badger.
Karel and Zastrow accounted for 42 of the Badgers 59 points. Only six UW players scored in today's game.
Sophomore Tiera Stephen tied her season high with three steals. Stephen went down in the final minute of play, injuring a knee. She will be evaluated on Monday.
Wisconsin set a season record for fewest turnovers per game with 14.29. The previous low was 15.18 per game set in 2008-09. This year's team turned the ball over a season low 443 times, breaking the previous low mark of 479 in 2007-08.
