MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin softball has come to a close for the fall season, winning three straight games to finish out. The Badgers played all three games at home over the weekend of Sept. 23-25, beating DePaul 4-2, Kirkwood College 15-0 and UW-Green Bay 4-3.
"Our staff was very pleased with the fall season," said head coach Yvette Healy. "We had the opportunity to see a lot of our young athletes compete against good competition."
Junior Meghan McIntosh pitched all seven innings against DePaul and only gave up three hits. The Badger offense was led by junior Molly Spence and sophomore Stephanie Peace. Peace went 3-for-3 in the game, with a triple and an RBI. Spence had a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Badgers the win against DePaul.
"Junior left-handed pitcher Meghan McIntosh made some great strides this summer," Healy said. "Having Molly Spence back hitting in the line-up gave our offense a huge boost too."
The Badgers were an offensive powerhouse against Kirkwood College, with Strange and sophomore Kendra Wright contributing triples and Peace with a home run. Wisconsin scored 15 runs on 16 hits, had zero errors and stole five bases in the game. Sophomore Amanda Najdek gave up three hits and pitched five strikeouts against Kirkwood.
In a comeback win, Wisconsin beat UW-Green Bay with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Michelle Mueller to score sophomore Mary Massei in the bottom of the seventh. Peace hit her second home run of the weekend and freshman Marissa Mersch had the team's only triple in the game. McIntosh pitched all seven innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out seven.
"After winning 30 games last year, and creating some momentum in the Badger softball program, our goal is to sustain that same level of excitement and energy," commented Healy. "We are looking forward to seeing how our young leaders respond to the challenges and adversity of battling injuries while traveling across the country and competing against a tough schedule."
