UW Coach and Player Quotes
Wisconsin vs. Canisius
January 7, 2011
Wisconsin Head Coach Mike Eaves
On his team’s initial energy:
“We came out in the first period, for the first four shifts we were down in their zone the whole time, so the immediate success we had in their zone, I think, lured us into not being as sharp and not doing the hard things, getting to the net, getting tips and rebounds. In the second period, I thought we fought ourselves a little bit. A lot of us didn't have our 'A' Game tonight. As a result, we started to fight ourselves. And in the third period, I thought we relaxed a little bit more and played the way that I know we're capable of.”
On the play of senior goaltender Scott Gudmandson:
“He back-boned us at the times that we needed, and he made the save that we needed to have. He didn't have a lot of work, but he was mentally focused and ready and sharp, and that was a big reason that we got the win. We had a 3-on-1 and a 2-on 1 at a time when it was 1-0, and he kept it that score. So he made the save at the right time for us.”
On Gudmandson being reliable throughout the recent stretch of games:
“I think the maturity level that he has shown, the confidence he's shown in all aspects of his game (the handling of the puck, the rebound control), his mental focus right through the game has been a real asset for him, and has allowed him to play at the level that he's playing at.”
On what stood out during the game:
“To me, this was a test of our mental toughness, in terms of not having what I would consider our 'A' Game. (We were) fighting ourselves a little bit, and readjusting in between the periods to come out, relax a little bit, and have confidence in the fact that we can play at a higher level in the next game.”
Sophomore Defenseman Justin Schultz
On the team’s start:
“We started off a little slow there, and I think we came in during the first intermission and regrouped a bit, and then we played pretty hard for the rest of the game. The pucks just weren't going in for us tonight; hopefully we can get some bounces tomorrow.”
On Scott Gudmandson:
“I don't think we want to rely on him (Gudmandson) too much, but we know that if we make a mistake, he's going to be there to bail us out.”
On how he can tell that Gudmandson is on his game:
“It seems like he's always on. There's not really a game where he's not on. If there is, he's still there, and he'll still make mistakes, but you can always tell that he's on.”
Senior Center Craig Smith
On seeing opportunities to score fall through and getting better because of it:
“I think our emphasis going into the second period was to just stick with our game. I think we got a little off-course after a few minutes in the first period. We started to play relaxed, so we started throwing our urgency back in the game.”
On how he can tell that Gudmandson is on his game:
“He’s definitely got some things he does before the game that other guys can see. He comes to the rink early and prepares himself. He's been very consistent lately, and we're glad to have him.”
Senior Goaltender Scott Gudmandson
On his consistency:
“I want to be reliable in the way that I'm consistent, and in some games I want to be spectacular. I want to be able to steal some games from the guys when they're not playing their best, but I want to be reliable as a consistent goaltender.”
On if he stole tonight's game:
“No, not really. If you look at the shots, we were up 40-18. I think even though we didn't play our 'A' game, we still played well.”
On his success at the Kohl Center:
“Having our fans behind us gets me going, and it's really exciting. I love the energy that they provide us.”
