MADISON, Wis. - After erupting for six goals in the first period, No. 1 Wisconsin (21-2-0, 15-2-0 WCHA) cruised to a 10-0 victory over St. Cloud State (0-21-1, 0-16-1 WCHA) before 2,232 fans at the Kohl Center Friday night. Junior Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) recorded her third hat trick of the season and led all players with five points.
Eleven Badgers recorded points and seven different players scored as the Badgers extended their winning streak to nine games. In addition to Knight, freshman Madison Packer (Birmingham, Mich.), sophomore Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) and senior Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) registered multi-point games.
"We practiced well Wednesday, had good intensity and moved the puck around well, and in Thursday's practice we had good jump. I think the start of the game and certainly the first period was reflective of that," head coach Mark Johnson said. "We really worked hard and prepared for today's game.
"St. Cloud is a young team and things maybe haven't gone how they designed it at the beginning of the year. When playing a team like that, the big thing on our end is to continue to grow. You don't want to develop any bad habits."
The Badgers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first 20 minutes with two first-period goals each from Knight and Packer. Knight opened the flood gates for the Badgers, scoring her first goal of the night, the game-winner, just 3:17 into the first period. UW also received first-period goals from blue-liners Saige Pacholok (Edmonton, Alberta) and Brittany Haverstock (Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia).
Senior Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) made it 7-0 with her 20th goal of the season at 7:04 of the second period, and sophomore Alev Kelter (Eagle River, Alaska) picked up her first point of the season with an assist. Fellow senior Mallory Deluce (London, Ontario) tallied her fourth career shorthanded goal at 19:05 to make it 8-0.
Knight completed her third hat trick of the season with an unassisted tally at 4:17 of the third period, and senior Geena Prough (Farmington, Mich.) capped the 10-0 shutout win at 6:43.
Sophomore goaltender Becca Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) earned her fifth career shutout and improved to 7-1-0 on the season, making seven saves. Ashley Nixon started the game in net for the Huskies, recording nine saves on 14 shots in the first 14:56 of the game. Tayler VanDenakk made 18 saves on 23 shots in 37:59 of action before Anna Donlan played the game's final 7:05, making one save.
The Badgers outshot the Huskies 38-7, including an 18-3 advantage in the first period. UW was 1-for-4 on the power play while scoring a shorthanded goal and holding SCSU to 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Duggan, Decker and Packer all extended their current point streaks, combining for eight points against St. Cloud. Duggan's current 19-game point streak ties the second-longest individual point streak in UW history, a record held by Sara Bauer (Feb. 12, 2005 to Nov. 9, 2005). The longest point streak was Meghan Hunter's 20-game scoring run from Oct. 14, 2000 to Jan. 12, 2001.
With six goals in the first period, the Badgers tied the UW record for the third-most goals scored in a single period. The Badgers have now had five six-goal periods in program history with two in 2008, one in 2005 and one in 2003. The Badgers have twice scored seven goals in a single period.
UW's 10-goal output ranks fourth in program history; the Badgers scored a record 14 goals against Bemidji State Nov. 18, 2000. The 10-goal margin of victory is the third-best by Wisconsin all-time as UW has had two 11-goal victories.
The Badgers and Huskies wrap up the series at 2 p.m. Sunday. UW looks to earn the series sweep and improve to 4-0-0 against St. Cloud State this season.
Sunday's game features three promotions for fans, including Kids Take Over the Kohl where kids 12 and under can sign up to perform various duties around the Kohl Center, including being a stick kid, puck kid, PA announcer, media correspondent, camera operator or video board operator.
Sunday also features a Wisconsin Men's Basketball Ticket Stub Offer. Fans who bring their Wisconsin Basketball vs. Illinois game ticket stub will receive admission to the game for only $1.
Finally, after Sunday's game, the Badgers are hosting their annual Skate with the Badgers event. The women's team will skate from 4:30 p.m. until 5:15 p.m., and the men's team will skate from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. Participating skaters must bring their own skates, and only those with skates will be allowed on the ice. Those without skates will still be able to interact with the student-athletes and coaches in an area with the glass removed.
