Post-game Quotes
Wisconsin Head Coach Lisa Stone
On how hard played the game was:
"It was a great game. I give our kids a lot of credit. We really responded. I thought we played very, very hard, gave great effort, and fought back from being down. We started the first overtime and they came out and got a couple of layups right away, but again, we're shorthanded again.
If you ask me about Lin (Zastrow), I don't know yet, but the doctor said she's being further evaluated. I give our kids a lot of credit.
It was certainly nice to have Alyssa Karel back out there, I thought Emily Neal gave us tremendous spark, knocking shots down, playing great defense, and was really very disciplined. Our post play, we had a lot of foul trouble going on in there, but our kids did a great job in there, (Carolyn) Davis is really a handful inside, no question. They shot a ton of free throws; we didn't get there enough. Again, I give our kids a lot of credit. They played they're tails off today."
On the teams free throws and progress with turnovers:
"We need to make our free throws too. I think in the second half, we make some free throws and we may shore some things up in regulation. But we didn't make our free throws and we put them there far too many times. Kansas is a very good team, they're going to have a great year, I wish them the best, and this is a great game for us. This is what we need. We need to be tested like this. Obviously we're not happy we came up on the short end, but our kids really played hard and I'm really proud of them."
On Alyssa Karel's first game of the year:
"It's nice to have her back. She logged a lot of minutes; we tried to keep her fresh, but she's awfully special, and was able to get in the paint and do what she wanted. They went to the zone and it stymied us for a bit. But again, Emily Neal knocked some big shots down and they came out of that. Different players stepped up, but it's nice to have that senior leader back."
On the end of regulation:
"The next time down the floor, we get a block called instead of a charge, and that's not the end of the game, but I thought our kids played really good defense down the stretch, anticipated well, clogged up the lane, did a good job of making them put it on the deck. I thought we did a very good job defensively, much than we did the other night."
On Marquette coming here on Wednesday:
"They're very good. They just beat Michigan the other day. They're very athletic. The length of this Kansas team was certainly imposing. Their length and their athleticism will simulate a little bit of what Marquette does. They have some long athletes as well, and it's imperative that we go at them and stay with the same game plan. Our kids did a good job, we had a couple of breakdowns here and there defensively and a couple of turnovers down the stretch, but overall, a great performance by our kids. They worked really hard and we're going to keep getting better, I guarantee you that."
On Emily Neal and Morgan Paige with career-high points:
"Those guards are doing a great job. Morgan has a great feel. Someone's up in her face, she's going to shot-fake drive you, and she makes her free throws, and that's huge. She's shooting about 95 percent from the free throw line and we'll take that to the bank each time we can get it."
Kansas Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson
Opening remarks:
"I’m proud of our kids, proud of our toughness, resiliency to go down six on the road against a good Wisconsin team and fight their way back into taking the lead and battling back and forth. We’d get a lead and the (Alyssa) Karel kid is obviously fantastic. That’s why we went to the zone and honestly because we struggled so much with the on-ball screen and they went to the 3s (so) we went back to our man (defense). She really dictated defensively what we did."
"I’m proud of Carolyn Davis to be that physical, she’s a great run over the top, catch a ball over the top score that way. It’s a great challenge to her. I’m really proud of her to step up and handle that, to have that kind of contact and finish."
"(Diara) Moore as a freshman stayed aggressive, competed, got on loose balls. Everybody, we shared the ball. We made extra passes. A good team win for a young team on the road."
On Zastrow getting hurt and Carolyn Davis scoring next points inside:
"Well, even if (Lin Zastrow) wouldn’t have been hurt I don’t know if she would’ve scored 12 of our next 13 but we still would’ve went inside. We’re going to play inside-out. (Davis) went on a run there where it went deep right in front of the rim and we scored a bunch. I don’t’ know if she had had those possessions but we’d still try and go inside and play around a little bit."
On the dominant presence at the end:
"(Monica) Engleman hits the 3 in the corner, Angel (Goodrich) hits the low runner in the lane, Aishah (Sutherland) hits the high-post jump shot, Tania Jackson hits a 3, Diara (Moore) drives and gets fouled and gets a bunch from the free throw line. Keena Mays gets fouled (and) gets to the free throw line. I think all of them scored. The ball doesn’t stick in anybody’s hands. They really believe in a good shot means nobody else on the floor has a better shot and we'll let go of it and share it. And that was not only important today but that’ll be important for us all year."
On the 3-pointers at the end:
"We’re going to go inside first but we’ll need to space the defense especially with as much traffic as there was in the lane. Angel (Goodrich) throws the ball out on a pass and Tania (Jackson) is wide open because Tania’s guy is in Carolyn’s lap. And (Tania’s) great, perhaps arguably our best 3 point shooter if not second best in the program. So that’s how the play developed, it’s wasn’t a design for us to kick that out. We were still trying to go inside and then out if we needed to. We felt like if we could reverse the ball, we got good shots. We got pretty good looks. And we were inside-out, we got pretty good looks as well."
