Krueger named to All-Big Ten Team
May 13, 2009 | Softball
Wisconsin sophomore Jen Krueger, a native of Portage, Wis., was honored as a Third-Team All-Big Ten selection, the conference announced Wednesday. The award is the first for Krueger who led the 2009 Badgers in batting average (.323), hits (51), runs scored (21) and stolen bases (18) while hitting in the leadoff position.
The award speaks to Krueger's hard work and team play in her two years at UW. Jen came to Madison two years ago as a right-handed hitter and is now one of the program 's all-time leaders as a lefty slapper ( sportid=126&storyid=17897"> --> watch Jen's story here ). Playing center field for the second-straight season, Jen had a fielding percentage of .958 and only missed two games this season.
Senior Theresa Boruta earned her second Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The Chicago, Ill. native was also Wisconsin's sportsmanship honoree in 2008. In four seasons with the Badgers Boruta played seven different positions, including pitcher while playing in 190 career games. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection leaves the UW as the school 's all-time leader in sacrifice hits (42), fourth in stolen bases (31) and third in stolen-base percentage.
Michigan and Northwestern swept the conference's individual awards with two honorees for each school. NU's Tammy Williams was named Player of the Year and Adrienne Monka was the league's Freshman of the Year. Michigan's Nikki Nemitz was named the Pitcher of the Year and head coach Carol Hutchins was the conference 's Coach of the Year in 2009.
