MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women's hockey team is coming off of a series sweep after securing 3-0 and 6-2 wins over Minnesota State last weekend. With final exams beginning on Wednesday, the team concludes 2009 with a two day, two-on-two tournament from Dec. 14-15.
Wisconsin heads home for the holidays for a short break, before regrouping on Dec. 30 to prepare for one of the most anticipated games of the season.
The Badgers face Team USA on Jan. 5 as head coach Mark Johnson returns to coach at the Kohl Center for the first time since directing the Badgers to a 7-0 NCAA Quarterfinal victory over Dartmouth on March 14, 2009.
However, those who will don the red, white and blue on Jan. 5 has yet to be determined.
USA Hockey formally announces the official 2010 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey roster on Dec. 17 at the Best Buy Rotunda at Mall of America at 4:30 p.m. (CT). As the team shrinks from 23 to 21 players, current Badgers Hilary Knight and Meghan Duggan along with former Badgers Jinelle Zaugg-Siergiej, Erika Lawler, Jessie Vetter, Molly Engstrom, Kerry Weiland and Angie Keseley are all up for a spot on the 21-player roster.
Johnson and the teams' general manager, Michele Amidon will speak at the ceremony and fans can receive autographs from the entire 2010 U.S. Olympic team after the free event.
Team USA recently suffered a 6-2 loss to rival Canada on Dec. 12 in the first of a four-game series. The team faces Canada tonight, Dec. 15, and then again on Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 before Johnson and crew it head to the Kohl Center to face the Badgers.
The women's hockey team would also like to welcome all Madison area fire fighters, EMS personnel, police officers and veterans to the Jan. 5 game against Team USA in honor of "Local Hero Night" presented by Becker Law.
