In-state rivalry games continue at Green Bay
December 09, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Wednesday night a few battles will take place inside the Kress Events Center in Green Bay, Wis., when the Wisconsin women's basketball team takes on Green Bay at 7 p.m.
First, state bragging rights are on the line. The Badgers have a 1-0 record against teams from the state of Wisconsin so far after defeating UW-Milwaukee 71-69 in double overtime on Dec. 2. The Badgers are Green Bay's first state rivalry game this year as the Phoenix will also take on Marquette on Dec. 20 and UW-Milwaukee twice during the Horizon League conference season.
Second, someone's winning streak will come to an end as both teams ride a long winning streak into Wednesday's game. After losing its first contest of the season, Wisconsin (8-1) has since won eight straight which is its longest winning streak since winning 15 in-a-row during the 2001-02 season. The Phoenix are out to an 7-0 start, their best since moving to NCAA Division I.
Green Bay, the preseason pick to win the Horizon League, has been successful so far this season by depending on a balanced scoring attack that has four players averaging double figures. Lavesa Glover leads the team with 11.6 points per game. Three others average 10 points per game including Rachel Porath (10.7 ppg), Celeste Hoewisch (10.4 ppg) and Kati Harty (10.0 ppg). Harty is perfect at the free throw line so far this season at 24-of-24.
Sophomore guard Alyssa Karel leads the Badgers this season by averaging 14.0 points per game and has scored in double figures in all nine games this season. She had a career-high 25 points against Northern Illinois by shooting 11-of-14 from the field (.786). That shooting percentage ranks sixth on the UW single game field goal percentage list.
