Badgers Roll Over Mastodons, 85-69
December 02, 2007 | Women's Basketball
Backed by three Badgers recording double figures, including Jolene Anderson who led all scorers with 26 points, Wisconsin topped IPFW by 16 points Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center. With the 85-69 win, the Badgers evened their overall record to 3-3, while IPFW fell to 2-3 overall.
Freshman Tara Steinbauer, who got her first start today, put the first seven points on the board for Wisconsin before another UW player, Danielle Ward, contributed with a bank shot from below. UW scored three unanswered baskets, going up over IPFW by six, 13-7, just six minutes into regulation.
But the Mastodons would not dissipate, hitting a total of seven 3-pointers in the first half to stay within reach of the Badgers. Coming into the game, IPFW was averaging .286 percent from behind the arc, but hit 7-of-19 for .368 percent in 20 minutes of play today.
At the half, Wisconsin had an eight-point lead over the Mastodons, 44-36. Leading all scorers in the first half was Johnna Lewis-Carlisle of IPFW with 17 points. Three Wisconsin players, Steinbauer, Anderson and Janese Banks tallied 10 points each in the first half. As a team, UW shot 64 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, making 16-of-25 shots.
Entering the second half, Badger Rae Lin D'Alie was the first to score hitting a 3-pointer to give UW an 11-point lead, 47-36. The Badgers continued to run the court, scoring a total of nine unanswered points before IPFW's Lewis-Carlisle hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game.
UW jumped to a 26-point lead with just over 12 minutes left in the second half. But, again, the Mastodons continued to maintain a strong offensive presence, scoring eight points in the next two minutes, to cut UW's lead to 20, 69-49.
Ultimately, IPFW's effort was not enough to catch the Badgers who made a season-high 31 field goals in the game, shooting 48.4 percent from the field. Although scrappy and playing an entire 40 minutes, IPFW could not catch Wisconsin, who won by 16 points, 85-69.
Anderson led all scorers with 26 points in the game, also grabbing eight rebounds. The senior made 10-of-14 shots from the field, setting a new season-high shooting percentage of .714. Two other Badgers recorded double figure points in the game. Banks and Steinbauer each finished with a season high in points with 19 and 16, respectively.
IPFW's Lewis-Carlisle finished with 24 points in the game, while Courtney Reed was the only other Mastodon to record double figures with 12 points. Of note, the Mastodons made 11-of-37 3-pointers in the game. With the 37 attempts, IPFW set a new Kohl Center record for 3-pointers taken in a game.
Continuing its five-game home stretch, the Badgers take on in-state rival UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin Head Coach Lisa Stone Quotes
On the team's second-half adjustments: 'I liked the way we started the second half. We came out and hit a shot right away and that helps us. We talked a lot about [Johnna] Lewis-Carlisle, that's a special player right there. The girl is 5 '5'' and has a tremendous hesitation [move], can shoot the three and get to the basket. We made some adjustments and I thought Janese Banks did a great job on her in the second half. I thought the start of our second half was very good. The last seven minutes were a little sloppy and we'll talk about that, but overall I 'm real proud of our team in coming back home' We did address rebounding too at the half. It was pretty even on the glass at the half and I believe we out-rebounded them by over 20 [in the second half] and that was our goal.
On IPFW's three-point shooting: 'We did a much better job [defending their three-pointers] in the second half. Number two [for IPFW] was three-for-three in the first half on her threes and we really locked her down out there in the second half. We also did a better job on Lewis-Carlisle. We also found some good shots for us. I do think we need to check the basket on the left side on the left block because we may have missed all 25 of our shots [from that spot]. I think there's something wrong, I 'll have to see if we can fix that left side over there. But again, it's a 'W' and when you can win and make some adjustments that's a good thing.
On several of the players' individual performances: 'Overall, it 's fair to say that when [Jolene Anderson] has the ball in her hands she 'll find some other people. I thought in the first half, defensively we got a steal in transition and her first pass really got things going. I thought Tera Steinbauer had a tremendous breakout start for us. Janese [Banks] found a rhythm too from the outside. I thought we missed Janese a few times in the first half but that's something we can work on by watching tape.'
IPFW Head Coach Chris Paul Quotes
Opening statement: 'We came in here knowing that this was a very good basketball team and I feel like we got a little bit of a bad break by them not playing so well the other night. Whenever you've got a good team who gets beat, they 're going to come back in here and try to prove something and get back on a winning note, so I feel like we played them at a bad time. I was impressed with our efforts. We've got some things to work on. Overall, I'm pretty pleased.
What caused his team to get further behind in the second half' 'Sometimes teams are just a little bit better and Wisconsin is a little bit better than we are right now. They've got obviously the Big Ten player of the year in my opinion and they came out with some fire. I think the turningpoint was that we had the ball and we came out and turned it over.'
Was it part of his game plan to have that many three-point attempts' 'When you look at the size that Wisconsin has and the size that we don't have, we wanted to try to go in ' we just couldn't, because they kept bringing big body after big body after big body off the bench and we just didn't have the ability to score inside.'
