Hnatyk, Olivarez Lead Badgers On Day 1
September 30, 2006 | Softball
Katie Hnatyk went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Wisconsin's 11-1 win over UW-Green Bay in the opener. Freshman pitcher Letty Olivarez threw a one-hit shutout against UW-Parkside in the nightcap. Both helped Wisconsin to two wins Saturday at the UW-Green Bay Fall Invitational. The Badgers conclude the fall season with two games Sunday.
Olivarez allowed a walk and a double in the third inning against UW-Parkside and that was it. The Rangers went down in order in five of the six other innings. An error led to a base runner in the seventh.
Olivarez struck out seven to get her second win in as many starts. She's allowed one hit and no runs in 11 innings this fall.
The Badgers loaded the bases against Ranger starter Meagan Shimkus in the top of the third inning. Athena Vasquez and Hnatyk had one-out singles and moved up on a walk to Joey Daniels. Ricci Robben plated the first and only run of the game on a ground ball to shortstop Michelle Racine, who took the force out at second base. Vasquez scored from third for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Hnatyk capped a six-run fourth inning against UW-Green Bay in the opener with a three-run blast over the left field fence. She led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk-off shot to left that enforced the 10-run mercy rule.
Alexis Garcia also homered in the fourth inning for the Badgers. She finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Eden Brock allowed one run in four innings while striking out six to pick up the win.
