Wisconsin pitcher Letty Olivarez (Newark, Calif.) didn't allow a hit in four innings and the Badgers pounded out 12 hits in a 12-0, five-inning win over UW-Green Bay Saturday at the Wisconsin Fall Tournament at Goodman Diamond.
Northwestern beat UW-Green Bay, 8-0, in five innings in game one. The third scheduled contest between Wisconsin and Northwestern was cancelled due to rain.
Olivarez, a freshman in her first collegiate start, struck out four and walked two on the day. She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk and scored on a Katie Hnatyk triple in the fourth inning that made it 5-0 Wisconsin.
'Our pitching was outstanding,' said UW head coach Chandelle Schulte. 'Letty Olivarez did a fantastic job. She got in trouble of couple of times but kept her composure.'
A little nervous, Olivarez walked the first batter she faced, then retired 11 straight before surrendering a two-out walk in the fourth inning.
'The girls helped me feel a little bit more calm,' said Olivarez. 'They were like, `just have fun'. We got hits and didn't make any errors so it went pretty well.'
Wisconsin had a 4-0 lead before Olivarez made her first pitch. Ricci Robben singled, Valyncia Raphael doubled and Lynn Anderson scored two with a single ' all with two outs ' to account for the scoring in the first.
A trio of pinch hitters ignited a seven-run, fifth-inning for Wisconsin. Stephanie Doyle led off with a double. Stephanie Chinn walked and Liz Klemp followed with a three-run home run to left centerfield. Hnatyk and Joey Daniels added two-run doubles later in the inning and UW had a 12-0 lead.
'Offensively we had a lot of hits, but we're capable of hitting the ball harder and better so that's exciting,' said Schulte. 'I was really excited with the kids that we brought in the fifth inning who really sparked our rally so that was awesome.'
Hnatyk went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Wisconsin. Athena Vasquez chipped in two hits and scored two runs. Leah Vanevenhoven struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 fifth inning in the circle for UW.
