Julie Wright Named Assistant Softball Coach
June 15, 2006 | Softball
Julie Wright, who has served as head softball coach at the University of Akron the past two seasons, has been named an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin, head coach Chandelle Schulte announced.
'I'm excited to join coach Schulte and her staff at Wisconsin,' said Wright. 'There's a great sports atmosphere here and a lot of support for the team. I've known Chandelle for 10 years and always admired the way she coaches her players. She's been a winner at every place she 's coached.'
Wright, a Columbus, Ohio, native who was raised in nearby Westerville, compiled a 53-52 record in her short stint at Akron. The Zips finished 26-25 last spring and qualified for the Mid-American Conference tournament for the first time in four years.
Eight Akron players were named to the All-MAC team under Wright, including four in 2006. The Zips had two first-team selections in 2005.
'Julie is one of the best recruiters in the country, ' said Schulte. 'She is an experienced coach, who brings a wealth of knowledge to our program. Philosophically she fits in perfectly with Wisconsin and our softball team. Our goal is to win a national championship and Julie shares that vision. '
Before arriving in Akron, Wright spent five seasons as the top assistant at the University of Kansas where she served as coordinator of recruiting, academics and scheduling. Wright was also responsible for the development of the infielders and outfielders and served as the team's hitting instructor.
Wright attended Ohio University and competed for the Bobcats from 1990-94. She spent three seasons in the outfield before moving to shortstop her senior year. Wright was named team captain and hit .321 in her final season.
Wright graduated from Ohio in 1995 with a degree in sociology with an emphasis in criminology. She then spent one year as an assistant scheduler for Ohio Governor George Voinovich. The following year, Wright worked as a parole officer in the Department of Rehabilitation/Correction in Columbus, Ohio.
Wright returned to her alma mater in 1996 and spent four seasons as an assistant with the Bobcats before moving to Kansas.
