Alexis Garcia drove in four runs, including a three-run home run, to push the Wisconsin softball team over Iowa 4-1 in the team's final game of the season Sunday at the Goodman Softball Complex. The Badgers finish the season 22-22 overall and 6-11 in the Big Ten Conference.
Eden Brock (18-13) picked up the win for the Badgers, fanning six batters and allowing just one run on eight hits in the complete game effort.
Brittany Weil (27-13) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out five in seven innings.
Iowa cut in to Wisconsin's 3-0 lead with one run in the bottom of the second before the Badgers added an insurance run in the sixth on another Garcia RBI.
Garcia got the Badgers off to a hot start with a three-run homer in the top of the first. With two down in the inning, Katie Hnatyk and Joey Daniels sat on first and second for Garcia who took Weil's offering over the left-field wall for her fifth long ball of the year.
Wisconsin tacked on another run in the sixth when Daniels reached on a two-out walk and moved into scoring position on her third stolen base of the year. Garcia followed with a line drive single into left, and Daniels never broke stride to score from second, putting the Badgers ahead, 4-1.
Iowa (39-19, 12-7) got one run back in the bottom of the second when Emily Gerlick singled to the hole at shortstop to drive in Jenna Spratt from third. Steph Ackerson followed with a single into right-center, but spectacular defensive plays by Lynn Anderson and Sam Polito in the inning held the Hawkeyes to just the one run.
Wisconsin saw another defensive gem from Theresa Boruta at second base when the freshman caught a line drive off the bat of Emily Nichols and doubled-up Mindy Heidgerken at first to give the Badgers two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
