The Big Ten Conference announced today its all-conference softball selections, naming University of Wisconsin sophomore Katie Hnatyk to its second team and sophomore Joey Daniels to its third team.
'Katie and Joey have been tremendous both offensively and defensively for us this season,' head coach Chandelle Schulte said. 'This is a big honor for them and for the program.'
Hnatyk, a London, Ontario, native who was named to the third team last year, led the Badgers with three triples (tied for third most in the league), 10 home runs (tied for fifth most), 33 RBIs and 83 total bases. Her 10 homers give her 19 for her career, moving the outfielder into third place in UW's career home runs list.
Daniels batted .322 and drew a team-high 24 walks (tied for eighth most in the conference) for an on-base percentage of .473, tops among starters and fourth best in the Big Ten. The catcher from Oakley, Calif., also came through in the clutch, posting a .327 batting average and 17 RBIs with two outs on the board.
The all-conference honorees were nominated and selected by Big Ten coaches, who also selected a player of the year (Northwestern's Garland Cooper), a pitcher of the year (NU's Eileen Canney), a freshman of the year (NU's Tammy Williams) and a coach of the year (NU's Kate Drohan).
In addition, each school had one student-athlete chosen for a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, with senior Kaitlin Reiss being Wisconsin's selection.
