April 28, 2006 | Softball
Valyncia Raphael's three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning propelled the Wisconsin softball team past Penn State 3-0 Friday evening at Goodman Softball Complex.
Eden Brock pitched a three-hit shutout for the Badgers (21-19 overall, 5-8 Big Ten) with five strikeouts. The complete game shutout was her fourth of the season and improved her record to 17-10 this year.
Raphael's third home run of season was the sixth and final hit allowed by Penn State pitcher Missy Beseres. The senior, who entered the evening with an ERA of 0.86, was pulled following the third inning for her shortest outing of the season after allowing six hits, the second most she has given up this season.
With the loss, Beseres saw her record fall to 18-6 on the season while the Nittany Lions fell to 33-13 overall and 6-9 in Big Ten play.
Jenn Reynolds replaced Beseres following the third inning and allowed two hits while striking out four batters in three innings of work.
After giving up hits to the first two batters she faced, Brock settled down and did not allow another hit until the sixth inning. In fact, she retired the side in the top of the seventh as Wisconsin won its second straight game.
The Badgers conclude their series vs. Penn State at noon Saturday.
