UW, Illinois-Chicago Battle Again on Wednesday
April 25, 2006 | Softball
The University of Wisconsin softball team (19-19) will be looking to get back on track when it plays its final non-conference opponent, Illinois-Chicago (20-27), at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Goodman Softball Complex. The game will have live stats and a free radio broadcast available on uwbadgers.com.
UW is coming off a 1-3 weekend and has consequently dropped to 10th in the Big Ten Conference standings. A win over the Flames'the Badgers won the first game of the home-and-home series 2-0 last Wednesday'would certainly boost Wisconsin's confidence heading into this weekend against Penn State and Ohio State.
One area the Badgers will be looking to shore up is their pitching. This is a somewhat surprising notion considering that junior Eden Brock entered last weekend with six straight wins, but she took all three losses (and got the lone win), while the team as a whole had 18 runs scored against them. Brock will hopefully have a repeat performance vs. UIC, against which she threw a two-hit shutout.
Sophomore Joey Daniels was a bright spot in the recent games, getting a hit in all four contests, including the only hit Friday vs. Indiana. She currently ranks sixth in the Big Ten with a .453 on-base percentage.
Sarah Clynes of the Flames also will enter Wednesday's game with some momentum; included in her successful weekend was a two-run RBI single that rallied her team to a 5-4 lead over UW-Green Bay on Saturday. At the plate, she is batting .282 with 19 RBIs.
Clynes pitched a win against UWGB to improve to 11-5 on the year with a 2.87 ERA. She and her teammates regrouped after their loss to Wisconsin to knock down DePaul 10-4 on Friday and take 2-of-3 from UW-Green Bay Saturday and Sunday.
Another offensive threat is Joyce Cathey, who has a .341 average and six home runs for a squad-best .533 slugging percentage. As a team, UIC is hitting for a combined .261 mark.
The mid-week contest is the first of a seven-game home stand to end the season for the Badgers.
