Early Runs Hurt Badgers in 3-1 Loss

The Wisconsin softball team could not overcome an early three-run deficit, falling 3-1 to Indiana Friday afternoon. Sophomore Joey Daniels recorded Wisconsin's only hit of the game with an RBI single in the fourth.
Eden Brock (14-8) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings in the circle. The junior hurler held the Hoosiers to just one hit in the second through fifth innings. Freshman Leah Vanevenhoven came on in relief and pitched a flawless sixth inning with one strikeout.
Mariangee Bogado (14-8) picked up the win for Indiana, allowing just the one run on only one hit. Bogado struck out five in the complete game.
Wisconsin (18-17, 3-6) broke through against Bogado in the top of the fourth when Sam Polito was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Theresa Boruta and Katie Hnatyk moved Polito to third, and she touched home as Daniels placed the Badgers' only hit of the ballgame into shallow right.
The Hoosiers (22-21-1, 4-8) struck first when Bogado led off the first inning with a single through the left side of the infield and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.
Jennilee Huddleston stepped up next and delivered an RBI single up the middle, and Lauren Hines followed with a double down the left-field line. Both runners scored when Kim Richards hit a double to the wall in right center, putting the Badgers in an insurmountable 3-0 hole.
The Badgers and Hoosiers play game two of the series Saturday at 11 a.m. CT at the IU Softball Field.
