Tucker's 29 Leads UW Past Georgia
December 31, 2006 | Men's Basketball
Wisconsin forward Alando Tucker scored a game-high 29 points and added eight rebounds as the fourth-ranked Badgers earned their 10th consecutive win with a 64-54 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs Sunday.
The win moves UW to 14-1, marking just the sixth time in school history Wisconsin has won 14 of its first 15 games. The 10-game winning streak is the Badgers longest since 2000-01.
Georgia got 20 points and 13 rebounds from Takais Brown, but it wasn't enough to end a two-game skid as the Bulldogs fell to 8-4. It was just the second loss at home for Georgia this season.
Tucker, the Big Ten's second-leading scorer heading into the contest, scored 20 or more points for the ninth time in 15 games this season. He was 11-of-19 from the floor, including two 3-pointers, and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Kammron Taylor was the only other Badger in double figures with 14. Mike Mercer and Sundiata Gaines had 11 points each for Georgia.
The Badgers got four quick baskets in the paint before a 3-pointer and a free throw by Tucker put UW up 12-2 early on. That would prove to be the largest lead held by either team in the contest.
Georgia outscored UW 15-5 over the final eight minutes of the first half and took a 32-31 lead into halftime. It was just the second time the Badgers have trailed at the half this season.
Tucker scored eight points during a 10-4 Wisconsin run to begin the second half. Mercer countered with a 3 for Georgia and later pulled the Bulldogs within one at 48-47 with seven minutes left to play.
Taylor hit a crucial 3 for Wisconsin, and then sank another jumper to put the Badgers up by four with less than three minutes remaining. Tucker hit a 3-pointer on Wisconsin 's next possession.
Marcus Landry made all five of his free throws and scored seven points in the final two minutes to seal the win. He and Brian Butch finished with eight and seven points, respectively.
