Badgers Head to Arizona
November 03, 2006 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The University of Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams are off to the desert this weekend to face Arizona; the men's team also will take on UC-Santa Barbara. The competition takes place at 3 p.m. CT Friday with an exhibition at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The last time the 19th-ranked Badger women (3-0) were in the water was two weeks ago when they competed in the SMU Classic. The Badgers finished third as sophomore Yi Ting Siow won the 200-yard IM with an NCAA 'A' time of 2:00.01 and won the meet 's High Point Swimmer award.
The Wisconsin men (3-0) haven't competed since they defeated Iowa 240-111 and UWM 296.5-55.5 three weeks ago. Senior co-captain Tom Molzahn won five events, including the 500-yard (4:34.54) and 200-yard (1:42.05) freestyle.
This meet will be Arizona's first of the season, and it marks the fifth consecutive season that the Wildcats have opened up against the Badgers. Last season the Badger men and women both fell to the Wildcats 176-85, and 138.5-123.5, respectively.
Susan Johnson was victorious in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.30) while Yi Ting Siow won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.68). On the men's side it was Molzahn who stood out, as he won the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.31), the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.75) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:35.56).
The meet's third opponent, USCB, did not compete in last year's competition. The Gauchos, however, are coming off two consecutive dual-meet losses against the University of Hawaii Oct. 27-28. UCSB fell 114.5 to 108.5 in the first competition; in the second day, despite three wins from sophomore Chris Good, the Warriors were again victorious, winning by a score of 160-120.
