November 25, 2006 | Men's Hockey
Sophomore goalie Shane Connelly made 19 saves to record his second career shutout as the Wisconsin men's hockey team snapped a six-game skid with a 2-0 decision over No. 6 Michigan State at the Kohl Center in the final game of the College Hockey Showcase.
Senior Andrew Joudrey (Bedford, Nova Scotia) scored in the first minute of the second period and sophomore Ben Street (Coquitlam, British Columbia) added another in the last minute of the same period to give Wisconsin (5-9-2 overall, 3-6-1 WCHA) its first win since Nov. 3.
Connelly (Cheltenham, Pa.) took over from there, stopping 15 shots over the game 's final two periods to notch his first shutout since a 5-0 victory at Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 17, 2006.
On the other end, Jeff Lerg made 25 saves to keep Michigan State (6-6-1, 4-4-1 CCHA) in the game.
After a scoreless first period, the Badgers needed just 42 seconds to break the deadlock in the second. Joudrey took a pass from Ben Grotting (Birmingham, Ala.) and beat Lerg with a shot from the top of the left circle. Junior Kyle Klubertanz (Sun Prairie, Wis.) also added an assist on Joudrey's second goal of the season.
Street gave the Badgers a 2-0 lead with 46 seconds remaining in the frame. Street followed up his own rebound and backhanded the puck into the open net for his third goal of the season.
Freshman Michael Davies (Chesterfield, Mo.) and senior Jeff Likens (Barrington, Ill.) tallied assists on Street's power-play goal. Likens' assist ended a 12-game point drought that dated back to Oct. 13.
Wisconsin finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play while Michigan State went 0-for-2.
UW is now 6-2-0 in its last eight games in the College Hockey Showcase after going 2-17-1 in the first 10 years of the event. In the last four years of the CHS, Wisconsin is 3-1-0 against both Michigan and Michigan State.
The Badgers are off next weekend before they return to WCHA action to face North Dakota Dec. 8-9 at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday with both games presented live by FSN North.
