
Gophers Take Game One

The Wisconsin men's hockey team (4-7-2, 3-5-1 WCHA) fell to Minnesota 2-1 Saturday night at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. Ross Carlson tallied the lone Badger goal, his first of the season.
At the 2:22 mark of the first, Minnesota's Alex Goligoski scored his fourth of the season during a Minnesota power play with helpers from Mike Howe and Kyle Okposo.
UW freshmen Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Aaron Bendickson (Thief River Falls, Minn.) both left the game in the first period due to injury, leaving the Badgers a little short on players for the rest of the game.
Minnesota scored the game winner at the 6:06 mark of the third, as Blake Wheeler centered a pass to Jay Barriball who was able to score his ninth of the year giving the Gophers the 2-0 lead.
With just under five minutes left in the final frame, Carlson (Duluth, Minn.) was able to corral a Jamie McBain (Faribault, Minn.) rebound cutting the lead to one, but the one goal was all the Badgers could muster. McBain, along with Davis Drewiske (Hudson, Wis.) notched assists on the Carlson goal.
Wisconsin's Brian Elliott ended the night with 33 saves, while Minnesota 's Kellen Briggs stopped 25 shots. Wisconsin was scoreless on the power play, finishing 0-for-2, while the Gophers finished 1-for-4.
