
Badgers Breeze by Iowa, UWM

The University of Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams won 15 of 16 events on the final day of a triangular against Iowa and UW-Milwaukee Saturday at the UI Fieldhouse. The Badger men beat the Hawkeyes by a score of 240.0 to 111.0 and UWM 296.5 to 55.5. The Badger women also defeated Iowa 235.5 to 112.5 and UWM 252.0 to 94.0.
Sophmore Yi Ting Siow set a pool and school record when she won the 200-yard breaststroke with an NCAA-'A' time of 2:11.24. Siow also won the 400-yard IM (4:19.22) in addition to being part of the first-place 400-yard medley relay with Susan Johnson, Jenny Gelden and Hannah McClurg.
Freshman Gabby Maddalena continues to impress in only her second meet as a Badger. Maddalena was victorious in both the 1,000-yard freestyle Friday (10:05.24) and Saturday 's 500-yard freestyle (4:58.18)
Leading the way for the men was sophomore Scott Rice who won five events total. Friday, Rice took home the title in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.25) and the 200-yard IM (1:55.22). Rice added to his total Saturday when he won the 100-yard butterfly (50.16) and was a member of the first-place 400-yard medley relay team (3:25.50) with Nick Fulton, Eric Johnson and Tom Molzahn.
Molzahn, the senior co-captain, also was a five-event winner, winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.54) while also being a part of the winning 400-yard medley relay team (3:25.50) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:24.29) Saturday. On Friday night he was the 200-yard freestyle champion (1:42.05)
Head Coach Eric Hansen was very proud of the way the team performed, 'It was a solid effort for our first away meet,' said Hansen. 'I think the team came together and showed some real signs of improvement and of what's to come. '
The Badger divers also put forth a solid effort as Jenny Hawkins and Kelly Todd again led the team. Hawkins won the women's 3-meter board (235.60) and placed second in the 1-meter board with a score of 217.40. Todd, meanwhile, claimed third in both the men 's 1-meter (252.40) and the 3-meter (217.80).
'We have such a young squad,' diving coach Tom Michael said, 'and they have met all my expectations.'
The Badgers head to Tucson, Ariz., next week to take on Arizona and UC-Santa Barbara.
