Brock's No-No Powers UW to Tourney Title
October 01, 2006 | Softball
Wisconsin senior pitcher Eden Brock allowed no hits and struck out 14 batters against UW-Parkside in the championship game of the UW-Green Bay Fall Invitational Sunday. The Badgers defeated the Rangers 8-0 and finished a perfect fall season at 5-0. Wisconsin crushed Kishwaukee, a community college in Illinois, 15-2, earlier Sunday to reach the championship game.
Only two Wisconsin pitchers in school history have thrown a no-hitter during the regular season. Ashley Fauser blanked Temple 3-0 in 1999. Andrea Kirchberg threw two no-hitters, including a perfect game during the 2001 season. An error in the fifth inning of the championship game allowed the lone Ranger to reach base against Brock.
Brock got plenty of support from her offense. Leadoff batter Samantha Polito went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a run in the first inning. Valyncia Raphael scored two runs with a double in a five-run fifth inning for the Badgers. Theresa Boruta capped the inning with a two-run double of her own.
Stephanie Doyle went 4-for-6 at the plate in two games Sunday with a home run, two doubles and five RBI. She also pitched the final three innings against Kishwaukee to earn the save. Ricci Robben struck out nine Kougars in the opener over four innings to pick up the win.
Raphael and Athena Vasquez each posted three hits against Kishwaukee. The Badgers scored in every inning except the third and out hit the Kougars 16-3.
Wisconsin outscored its opponents 47-3 and out hit its opponents 54-7 in five games during the fall. Perhaps more important was the fact the Badgers committed just two errors.
Raphael hit .583 (7-for-12) during the fall to lead the team. Hnatyk went 6-for-12 with two home runs and a team-leading seven RBI in just three games. Vasquez had six hits and led the team with seven runs scored. Doyle finished with five hits in seven at bats.
UW pitchers Brock and Letty Olivarez combined for four wins in the circle. Together, they threw 22 innings, allowed four hits, one run and struck out 31.
