September 30, 2005 | Softball
The Wisconsin softball team will battle tough conference and non-conference opponents in its 2006 schedule, announced Friday. Highlighting the slate is defending national champion Michigan, which comes to Goodman Diamond for a doubleheader on April 16.
Wisconsin will also host one competition this fall, welcoming UW-Green Bay and UW-Parkside for a round-robin tournament Saturday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m.
The Badgers open their season Feb. 10 at the Arizona State Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz., and continue on the road with tournaments at Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech and Stanford through March. Wisconsin heads west for Spring Break to play against Fresno State, March 13, and in the Capital Classic, hosted by Sacramento State, March 17-19.
The Badgers begin Big Ten Conference play March 31 and April 1 at Northwestern before heading south for a doubleheader against Illinois that weekend.
Wisconsin opens at home with two big games against Minnesota on Sunday, April 9. Last season the Badgers clinched the inaugural Border Battle Cup for the University of Wisconsin with a sweep over the Gophers in Minneapolis.
The Badgers conclude their regular season with eight straight home games, wrapping up against Iowa on May 6 and 7.
Wisconsin is also scheduled to play non-conference matchups at home and on the road against Illinois-Chicago and UW-Green Bay as well as one game at Loyola (Chicago).
The Big Ten Tournament will be hosted by the regular-season conference champion May 12-14 with NCAA Regional competition scheduled for May 19-21. NCAA Super Regionals are slated for May 22-28, and the Women's College World Series will be held at the Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, June 1-5.
Last year Wisconsin finished the season 31-24, winning 18 of its last 20 games to earn a bid to the Big Ten Tournament and the right to host NCAA Regionals.
