December 11, 2005 | Men's Hockey
Led by four points from sophomore defenseman Kyle Klubertanz, the No. 1 Wisconsin men 's hockey team rebounded from Friday night's loss to claim a 7-0 victory over Michigan Tech Saturday night at the Kohl Center.
Klubertanz (Sun Prairie, Wis.) scored twice and added two assists as the Badgers (14-2-2 overall, 11-1-2 WCHA) tallied seven or more goals for the first time since a 7-3 win over Michigan Tech in October of 2004.
Junior goalie Brian Elliott (Newmarket, Ontario) stopped 17 shots to notch his third shutout of the season. He now has six shutouts in his career, tying him for fourth place on the UW career shutout list.
Michael-Lee Teslak and Rob Nolan combined to make 32 saves for Michigan Tech (3-14-1, 2-9-1). Teslak allowed three goals on 10 shots in the game 's opening 12 minutes before Nolan came on to make 25 saves in 48:05 of action.
Captain Adam Burish (Madison, Wis.) delivered the game-winning goal 6:02 into the contest. Sophomore Joe Pavelski (Plover, Wis.) sent a pass from the left side to Burish in the slot, who tapped the puck past Teslak. The goal was Burish's fourth game-winner of the season.
Burish now has seven career short-handed goals in WCHA play, tying him for first place in the UW record book with Norm Cherry and head coach Mike Eaves.
The Badgers opened up a 4-0 lead with a trio of power-play goals. Robbie Earl (Los Angeles) gave Wisconsin a 2-0 advantage when he capitalized on a Michigan Tech turnover. Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis.) made it 3-0 with a point-blank shot at the 11:47 mark of the first. Klubertanz notched his first goal of the game 11:54 into the second frame, giving the home team a four-goal lead going into the final period.
Earl and Klubertanz each collected their second goal of the night in the third period while freshman Jack Skille (Madison, Wis.) closed out the scoring with his sixth goal of the season.
Beyond Earl and Klubertanz, four other Badgers recorded multiple points in the game. Jeff Likens (Barrington, Ill.) and Pavelski each had two assists while Dowell and Burish finished with one goal and one assist each.
UW concluded the game 3-for-9 on the power play while Michigan Tech was 0-for-8.
The Badgers and Huskies combined for 151 penalty minutes on the night, the second most to occur in a game in program history. Wisconsin and Colorado College combined for 162 penalty minutes on Feb. 20, 1993.
Wisconsin returns to the ice Friday, Dec. 16 to face the U.S. Under-18 National Team in an exhibition game at the Kohl Center. Face off for the game, which is included in the Saturday night season ticket package, is set for 7 p.m.
