UW Softball Signs Two
November 30, 2005 | Softball
Wisconsin softball coach Chandelle Schulte announced Letty Olivarez and Shannon Krein have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Badgers in 2006-07. Olivarez, a pitcher, and Krein, a catcher, represent Schulte's first recruiting class.
'Letty and Shannon will be tremendous additions to our team, ' Schulte said. 'Signing a pitcher and a catcher puts us on solid footing for the recruiting future. I am very pleased to welcome them to the UW family. '
Olivarez, from Newark, Calif., was a member of the All-Mission Viejo Athletic League Team and All-East Bay squad in 2005. Olivarez also was named the Mission Viejo Athletic League's Pitcher of the Year in 2004 when she also received all-league honors. As a freshman in 2003, Olivarez led her team to a runner-up finish in the North Coast Section.
'Letty has numerous effective pitches and is mentally tough in the circle,' Schulte said. 'I think she will be a great addition to our pitching staff.'
Olivarez attended Newark Memorial High School and played travel ball with the San Jose Sting. She intends to major in pre-med.
Krein, from Escalon, Calif., was named to the Trans Valley All-League First Team three years in a row and also was honored with a spot on the all-district team in 2004. Krein batted .467 as a junior last season.
'Shannon is a tremendous defensive catcher and has a ton of power potential at the plate,' Schulte said. 'Her work ethic and enthusiasm about the UW are contagious.'
Krein, who also plays basketball and golf at Escalon High School, participated in travel ball with the USA Elite squad. Krein intends to major in pre-law.
Krein's father, Joel, is a UW graduate and lettered in football at Wisconsin in 1979.
The Wisconsin softball team begins its 2006 season Feb. 10-12 when it travels to Tempe, Ariz., for the Kajikawa Classic. The Badgers are slated to play New Mexico, Texas, Fresno State, Nevada and Arizona State in their opening tournament.
