November 25, 2005 | Men's Hockey
The No. 2 Wisconsin men's hockey team scored three times in the third period to beat No. 18 Michigan State 3-1 Friday night in the first game of the 13th annual College Hockey Showcase at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich.
Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis.), Adam Burish (Madison, Wis.) and Ryan MacMurchy (Regina, Saskatchewan) tallied goals in the final ten minutes of the game for the Badgers (10-1-2 overall, 8-0-2 WCHA). With the win, UW extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games (9-0-2), the longest current streak in the nation.
Wisconsin junior Brian Elliott (Newmarket, Ontario) made 19 saves for the Badgers, who have yet to give up more than two goals in a game this season.
Goalie Jeff Lerg stopped 18 shots for the Spartans (5-6-3, 2-4-3 CCHA), who are now on a seven-game winless streak.
MSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead with less than one second left in the first period on a power-play goal by Drew Miller.
After two lackluster periods, the Badgers finally broke through at the 10:19 mark of the third. Just after a UW power play ended, MacMurchy found Dowell, who beat Lerg with a quick shot. Klubertanz also added an assist on Dowell's second goal in as many games.
Just under six minutes later, Burish gave Wisconsin its first lead of the night. After junior Robbie Earl (Los Angeles) fired a shot at the net, Burish collected the puck and tallied his second game-winning goal of the season with 4:11 left to play.
MacMurchy closed out the scoring when his backhander from UW 's defensive zone found the empty net at the other end at the 19:04 mark.
Wisconsin finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play while Michigan State was 1-for-8.
UW is now 4-1-0 in its last five games in the College Hockey Showcase, including 3-0-0 in its last three CHS contests hosted by Michigan State and Michigan.
The Badgers conclude the 13th annual College Hockey Showcase Saturday night when they play No. 1 Michigan in Ann, Arbor, Mich. Face off at Yost Arena is set for 6:30 p.m. CST.
