Openings Still Available for Softball Camps
June 17, 2004 | Softball
Opportunities still exist for girls from age seven through high school to participate in the Wisconsin softball camps scheduled to run from July 12-22.
An original registration deadline of June 18 has been lifted and individuals will now be allowed to register on-site prior to the beginning of the respective camps.
'The camps will be a great learning tool for young players, ' Wisconsin softball head coach Karen Gallagher said. 'It is a great opportunity to work with a Division I coaching staff and collegiate athletes. For players that are involved with summer ball, this will be an opportunity for them to sharpen their skills.'
The first camp will be a beginner pitching camp slated for July 12 and followed by a beginner hitting camp on July 14. The camp will mainly focus on the fundamentals of the game. A number of drills that will help solidify the basic skills of both pitching and hitting will be involved with the initial camp.
Advanced pitching and hitting camps will run on July 13 and 15, respectively. The focus of the pitching portion will be learning and working on specific pitches including their grips and spins. A number of drills will be taught to work on the maintenance of the specific pitches. The hitting aspect of the camp will involve a more in-depth and complex discussion of hitting and challenging drills that hitters can use as preparation. Players are suggested to be 12 years of age or older or have five-plus years of experience in softball to participate in the advanced camp.
Pitchers will have the opportunity to work with UW pitching coach Brandee McArthur, who is currently starring for the Akron Racers of the National Pro Fastpitch professional league.
A specialty camp will run July 19-20, prior to an all-skills camp July 21-22. The specialty camp will focus on infield and outfield play. The infield portion will be specialized to work on footwork and technique involved including working on double plays, first and third situations and rundowns. Outfielders will work on such skills as crow-hopping, working with a fence, diving and communication drills. The all-skills camp will provide a general overview of necessary skills needed to play softball. Skills that will be covered include throwing, catching, baserunning, hitting and sliding amongst others. It will also be used as a way to brush up on fundamentals of the game.
All of the camps will be held at the Goodman Softball Complex on the UW campus. For more information, click on the 'Camps' link on the left side of the page, or the PDF registration form link on the right.
