Badgers Wrap Up Non-Conference Season Thursday
May 06, 2004 | Softball
The Wisconsin softball team closes out its 2004 non-conference season Thursday when it travels to Illinois-Chicago to take on the Flames. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
UIC's website, uicflames.com, will offer live stats of the contest.
The game will be a rematch of the Badgers' home opener on April 6 when UIC went away with a 4-3 win in 10 innings. The Flames (32-20, 13-1 Horizon League) are 3-1 all-time against the Badgers.
UIC is led by junior Cameron Astiazaran and senior Amanda Rivera. Astiazaran has a .413 batting average and a whopping 23 doubles this season. Her average of 0.44 doubles per game ranks as a tie for the highest per-game average in the nation. Meanwhile, Rivera has socked a UIC single-season record home runs to go along with 50 RBI.
Despite some outstanding pitching performances by Katie Layne and Eden Brock, Wisconsin dropped all four of its contests to Illinois and Iowa last weekend at Goodman Diamond. The Badgers (27-27, 5-13) continue to be led offensively by the duo of Kris Zacher and Boo Gillette. Zacher has tallied a UW single-season record 59 hits this year, while Gillette has set new season standards in doubles (14) and RBI (34).
Wisconsin wraps up its season at home this Saturday and Sunday with single games both days against Minnesota.
