UW Stifled by Iowa State, 88-65
December 05, 2004 | Women's Basketball
Hot shooting by Iowa State and foul trouble by the University of Wisconsin women 's basketball team led to UW's 88-65 demise Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones (3-1) shot 28-of-56 (.500) from the floor, including 5-of-13 (.380) from 3-point range, in pushing the Badgers' (2-4) losing streak to four.
Juniors Jordan Wilson and Annie Nelson had 13 points apiece to lead UW, which was out-rebounded 40-30 and gave up 25 points from 17 turnovers.
Combined, the two Badgers were no match for Katie Robinette 's career-high 30 points and 10 rebounds. The senior forward for ISU was 10-of-16 in field-goal attempts and 10-of-15 from the line.
Overall, Iowa State made 27-of-37 of free throws in taking advantage of Wisconsin's season-high 30 fouls.
'We put them on the free throw line way too many times, ' head coach Lisa Stone said. 'We had way too many fouls, and we have to address that. But the loss really boils down to us losing momentum in the last seven minutes of the first half.'
To their credit, the Badgers had a hot hand themselves at the start of the game and built up a 13-5 advantage. Senior Stephanie Rich tallied five of her 10 points and a steal during the run.
But the Cyclones whittled away at the lead, and with help from a 6:47 scoring drought by UW, they went on a 16-0 run to get ahead 41-30 with 48 seconds left in the first half.
Nelson's basket with 18 seconds left ended the lull that began at 7:05 on the clock, and the Badgers went into the break down 41-32.
The woes continued as ISU opened period two with an 8-4 run, then poured in a pair of 3-point baskets in a subsequent 12-3 run.
In the final seven minutes of play, Iowa State scored just one basket but made 17-of-20 free throws.
'I thought we had a terrific start to the game and a terrific game plan,' Stone said. 'We just didn't have enough fire power to close the game, and it was too little, too late for us, and lots and lots of free throws for them.'
The Badgers return to the Kohl Center this Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game against UW-Milwaukee.
