Marquette played nearly a perfect game to defeat the University of Wisconsin women 's basketball team 78-64 Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center and extend its home winning streak to 15.
The Golden Eagles (5-0) collected 25 points off Wisconsin's 21 turnovers and had six players in double figures. They also committed just nine turnovers, countered with their 24 assists.
'We showed much better effort tonight then we did against Middle Tennessee State,' head coach Lisa Stone said. 'But we just didn 't have that killer instinct that we need to win ball games.'
Freshman Jolene Anderson paced the Badgers (2-3) with a career-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Junior Annie Nelson, making her first career start, scored all seven of her points in the first half to lead UW in the period.
That half, the Golden Eagles put points up in a hurry, taking advantage of 12 UW turnovers. They also opened the game with a 12-4 run.
The Badgers, however, used their rebounding advantage to tie the score at 21 with 7:55 left in the half. UW then tied the score for the last time with 5:18 left, but it was all Marquette from there as the team went on a 10-1 run to lead 38-29 at the break.
Wisconsin opened the second half with several miscues, allowing a 10-2 run from Marquette, which was led in scoring by Efueko Osagie (16 points) and Danielle Kamm (14).
The Badgers closed to within 70-56 with one of Anderson's four 3-pointers with 5:22 left. But the Golden Eagles surged to their greatest lead, 78-58, over the next three minutes.
UW countered with a 6-0 run for the final points of the game.
Wisconsin continues on the road for the fourth straight game, heading to Ames, Iowa, to take on Iowa State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
