Wisconsin AAU Slips Past Badgers, 82-79
November 07, 2004 | Women's Basketball
Stephanie Rich and Jolene Anderson each scored 18 points, but it was not enough as the University of Wisconsin women's basketball team fell 82-79 to Wisconsin AAU in an exhibition match Sunday at the Kohl Center.
AAU (1-2) used a 13-0 run early in the second half to build a lead that it never relinquished. WNBA player and former Nebraska star Anna DeForge led her squad with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Stephanie Rich made several crucial 3-point baskets during the Badgers' (0-1 preseason) counter-runs, one of which tied the game at 78. The senior guard finished 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and had eight assists.
Making her collegiate debut, UW's Jolene Anderson notched a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds. Teammate Jordan Wilson chipped in 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Former Wisconsin players Dee Dee Pate and Krista Bird combined for 18 points for AAU.
'I thought our team showed a lot of character coming back in the second half,' head coach Lisa Stone said. 'Now we need to take another step and continue to learn.'
The Badgers trailed 42-39 at the half. They opened the second period with a couple of free throws by Kjersten Bakke to cut their deficit to one. AAU responded by capitalizing on several UW turnovers and eventually got the lead as large as 16.
But Wisconsin held on, and with 1:51 left in the game, Ashley Josephson tied the game with her jumper. In the remaining time, AAU managed to steal the ball twice and scored two layups to earn its first win of the season.
The Badgers will conclude their exhibition schedule next week when they take on Minnesota State Moorhead at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Kohl Center.
