Basketball Captains Write Journals of the Season
November 25, 2004 | Women's Basketball
UW Captains Stephanie Rich and Ebba Gebisa will be regular contributors to the women's basketball game programs and on uwbadgers.com. with a Captain's Log of the season. This is the first article penned by senior point guard Steph Rich prior to the season start on Nov. 19.
The Badgers are now 2-0 for their best start since 1999, and participate in the Houston Classic on Friday and Saturday meeting the host school, University of Houston, then Middle Tennessee State.
"It's been 28 days of practice and two exhibition games, and we are finally ready to lace it up for real tonight against IUPUI. This season is a new look for our Badger family. With six returnees and six new freshmen we are ready to make some noise.
This all started way back in June when we were here for summer school and the beginning of our training. The returnees were excited to have the freshmen here so we could get to know them on and off the court. They had a hard time adjusting like any freshman, but those 7 a.m. workouts became routine for them, and they all made great strides during the summer. Our strength and conditioning (S & C) coach, Scott Hettenbach, did a great job of pushing us everyday we came to the Kohl Center and even had some inspiring speeches, especially for the freshmen.
Toward the end of the summer we were introduced to our new S&C coach, Bryan Miller. We were sad not to have Scott with us but not sad to see Blackhawk (ski jump) disappear. The freshmen have no idea what we went through, maybe some day we will show them. But Bryan has been awesome and like with any other change, you just roll with it.
All of the early mornings, playing pickup in the afternoons, individual workouts, and Elver (Park Hill) will pay off this season. We have all worked extremely hard and now all we have to do is demonstrate it on the court. We are all excited to tip it off tonight in the best arena in the country and in front of the greatest fans!!!
Go Badgers!
