UW Routs IUPUI 82-49 in Season Opener
November 19, 2004 | Women's Basketball
Freshman Jolene Anderson (Port Wing, Wis.) helped the University of Wisconsin women 's basketball team begin its 2004-05 campaign on a high note as she scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Badgers past IUPUI 82-49 Friday night at the Kohl Center.
Anderson, the state's all-time leading prep scorer, also grabbed 11 rebounds as Wisconsin (1-0) out-rebounded the Jaguars (0-1) 53-41 and held them to 31.5 percent shooting from the floor.
'It's a big win for us'one that we 'll remember because it made a statement,' head coach Lisa Stone said. 'We had contributions from a lot of people.'
Two Badgers were close to double-doubles, as junior forward Jordan Wilson (Naperville, Ill.) had 14 points and nine rebounds, while freshman guard Janese Banks (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied 15 points and seven rebounds.
Banks' former AAU teammate, Kia Hayes, who was IUPUI 's leading scorer last year, was limited to just three points off 1-of-7 shooting. Freshman Karima Davies led the Jaguars instead with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Wisconsin had an impressive first half, using runs of 10, 10 and 13 to eventually take a 47-17 lead at the break. Anderson was responsible for 11 points in that half, which had more points scored by UW than anytime last season.
With a strong defensive showing, the Badgers were able to rack up 14 steals while forcing 25 IUPUI turnovers. That helped UW get its lead to as high as 39 points during the contest.
'It was a lot of fun out there'a demonstration offensively and defensively of good things to come,' Stone said. 'It 's a team effort and I think our team is slowly starting to understand that. '
The Badgers look to make it two straight when they play host to Southern Illinois at 7 p.m. Monday at the Kohl Center.
