Softball Edged By Gophers

Minnesota won Saturday's pitchers' duel between UW's Andrea Kirchberg and UM's Piper Marten, 1-0. Both softball squads tallied just one hit apiece in the game.
Kirchberg held the Gophers hitless through five and a third innings and struck out four.
Minnesota's Jordanne Nygren sent a full-count pitch over the center field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up Kirchberg's no-hitter. Nygren's school-record 15th home run of the year gave Minnesota its 1-0 advantage.
Meghann Reiss broke up Marten's no-hitter with a two-out single in the top of the fifth. Reiss blasted a shot over Marten's head and into shallow center field.
The Badgers conclude their 2003 regular season with a noon game versus the Gophers Sunday.
