April 30, 2003 | Softball
Today's Wisconsin softball game versus the Illinois-Chicago Flames has been rained out. The Badgers are scheduled to play a doubleheader versus UW-Green Bay Thursday at the Goodman Diamond. The action starts at 4 p.m.
Badgers Face Fire To Close Home Schedule: The Badgers close out their 2003 home schedule this week with non-conference games versus UW-Green Bay. The Badgers battle the Phoenix in a doubleheader Thursday starting at 4 p.m. UW is 16-5-1 all-time against UWGB.
UW Closes Regular Season at Minnesota: The Badgers finish the 2003 regular season and perhaps the entire season with two games versus the Gophers this weekend. Wisconsin, 8-6 versus Goldy, swept the Gophers last year in Madison. With the Big Ten's top six teams advancing to the tournament, Wisconsin will be frozen out this year. However, with the NCAA tournament field at 64 teams this year, the Badgers will be looking to sneak in on selection day, May 11. UW defeated some highly ranked foes this year, but also needs to win its next five games to have a long shot.
Opening and Closing the Deal The Badgers have outscored opponents 12-10 in the first inning and 16-11 in the seventh inning. The trend continues in extra innings, with UW outscoring its foes 6-4 in the eighth inning and 6-1 in the ninth inning. Those extra inning tallies have led to a 6-3 record for Bucky when games go past seven innings.
It's in the name: The etymology of Anastasia Miller's first name should be in opponents' scouting reports. The Greek word `anastasis' is composed of the element `ana,' meaning `up. ' And that's the only place Miller has been sending balls this season. In eight at-bats, Miller has three hits: a double and two home runs.
Wisconsin Pride: Two of UW's leaders in the field this season hail from Wisconsin. Senior Erin Barnharst, from Arlington, Wis., is a two-time Big Ten Player of the Week, second on the team with a .271 batting average and 16 RBIs. She leads the Badgers with five home runs.
Milwaukee-native Kris Zacher leads the Badgers with eight two-hit games and 17 RBIs, courtesy of a team-high .333 BA with runners in scoring position. Zacher is tied for first on the team with five doubles and nine multi-hit games. Zacher also remained perfect in the stolen base category with her fourth of the year Saturday. Zacher is 11-for-11 in her career and is tied for fourth on UW's career charts.
Going Yard: Nearing the record Nine different Badgers have hit home runs this season. Barnharst leads UW with five dingers, while Boo Gillette has three. Five Badgers have two homers while two have one HR. Last weekend, three Badgers went deep at Goodman Diamond. UW's 20 round-trippers in 41 games this year top last season's 10 in 53 games. The team record for home runs in a season is 21, set by the 1999 squad.
