Barnharst Earns Second Big Ten Weekly Honor
April 28, 2003 | Softball
The Big Ten Conference named senior center fielder Erin Barnharst its Co-Player of the Week Monday. Barnharst was honored for her efforts in four games at Goodman Diamond over the weekend. The Badger softball team won on Saturday's Parents' Day and swept Ohio State on Sunday's Senior Day.
Barnharst led the Badgers at the plate against Penn State and Ohio State, recording a .583 batting average with seven hits in 12 at-bats. She was 4-for-4 in game two versus Ohio State Sunday with four singles and two runs. Barnharst singled in game one versus Ohio State and it was getting plunked that led to the game tying score. She scored from third on an Anastasia Miller hit to knot the game at 4-4.
The Arlington, Wis. native scored a team high four runs this weekend and tallied a .583 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage. Barnharst raised her batting average 39 points over the weekend from .232 and third on the team to a team-second .271. She was 2-for-3 Saturday, starting UW on a three-game winning streak.
It is Barnharst's and UW's second Player of the Week award this season. She earned Co-Player of the Week honors Feb. 19 after hitting three home runs at the Triangle Classic. Barnharst is just the second Badger to earn the league's weekly honor twice. Lindy Barth, Amanda Berg and Ashley Fauser each won the award once, while Andrea Kirchberg is a six-time honoree.
The Badgers close out their 2003 home schedule this week with non-conference games versus Illinois-Chicago and UW-Green Bay. The Badgers face the Flames Wednesday at 5 p.m. and battle the Phoenix in a doubleheader Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
