Softball Falls To Penn State
April 25, 2003 | Softball
The Wisconsin softball team dropped its Friday night match-up versus Penn State, 7-0, at the Goodman Diamond. The Badgers fall to 14-24 overall, 3-12 on the season.
Penn State got on the board in the top of the third with three-straight hits and a double steal. Mandy Nuxoll started things off by stealing second, prompting Boo Gillette to throw across the diamond. Pinch runner Steph Viola, waiting on third, stole home for the first run. Kelley Galigher followed with a hit to center field and moved to second on the throw home. Mandy Liles' throw to the plate kept Nuxoll at third. Behind Nuxoll, Erin Norton notched a two-run single into shallow left field, to give Penn State a 3-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth. Kaitlin Reiss snagged a line drive blast down the line to record the first out of the inning, but PSU put four more runs on the board to increase the score to 7-0 before the next two outs.
Penn State put a runner in scoring position in the first inning with no outs, but strong defense by Kris Zacher helped the Badgers out of the inning. Mandy Nuxoll grounded to Zacher and Zacher eyed Bianchini at second, but rifled it to first to catch Nuxoll. Wisconsin recorded the second out, catching Bianchini in a steal attempt. Zacher made an acrobatic stretch at third grabbing Boo Gillette's throw and making the tag. A ground out to second ended the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Mandy Liles cracked a shot through the middle to record the Badgers' only hit of the game.
The Badgers battle Penn State again Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. at Goodman Diamond and the game's action will air on 1310 AM (WIBA) in Madison. Jason Dickson and former Badger Amanda Berg provide the call.
