Badgers drop home opener
April 11, 2003 | Softball
The Wisconsin softball team lost to No. 13 Michigan, 3-0, Friday night in its 2003 home opener at Goodman Diamond. The Badgers fall to 13-17 overall, 2-5 Big Ten.
The Wolverines (22-8, 4-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning off a Marissa Young home run. Young also paced Michigan with 10 strikeouts.
The Badger defense denied the Wolverines extra runs in the fourth and the sixth. With runners on the corners and two outs, Lisa Mack looked to steal second. UW catcher Boo Gillette threw to shortstop Kris Zacher, but Zacher eyed Stephanie Bercaw at third and threw back home. Gillette blocked Bercaw at the plate and ended the inning.
With the score at 2-0 and one out in the sixth, Mack singled to right field and the Wolverines tallied their third score. Melinda Moulden rounded third looking to add to the lead, but Natalie Phillips quickly fired it in from right. Phillips connected with Meghann Reiss at first and Reiss' throw to Gillette at home was in time for the out.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mandy Liles singled to right for the Badgers' lone hit of the night.
The Badgers' rematch versus Michigan is tomorrow at noon at the Goodman Diamond. Live stats will again be available via the Gameday page on UWBADGERS.COM.
