Baldwin to Throw Out First Pitch
April 26, 2002 | Softball
U.S. Congresswoman and Madison native Tammy Baldwin will throw out the first pitch at Saturday's UW softball game versus Iowa. The game is scheduled to start at noon.
A volleyball enthusiast, Baldwin will test her skill at softball with the first pitch. Baldwin is the first woman to serve in the House of Representatives from Wisconsin. Elected to Congress in 1998, Baldwin currently serves on the House Budget and Judiciary Committees. A Madison West graduate, Baldwin earned her J.D. from the UW Law School and served on the Dane County Board and the Wisconsin State Assembly.
'I am excited to be joining the fabulous UW Badgers softball team as they go into this important weekend in Big Ten softball,' said Congresswoman Baldwin.
Baldwin joins Girl Neighborhood Power-Madison in the day's activities. The 'Little Dreamers' of Girl Neighborhood Power-Madison will sing the national anthem. Girl Neighborhood Power-Madison is an after-school and evening enrichment program designed specifically for girls ages 9-14. The program empowers girls to reach young adulthood healthy, strong and confident by giving them the skills and the guidance to make healthy choices.
The GNP girls from the Lake Point Community Center spent Thursday with members of the UW softball team, joining the student-athletes on campus and in classes.
'It's a great opportunity for the GNP girls to experience what it's like to be a college athlete,' UW coach Karen Gallagher said.
