Badgers Draw with Mavericks
November 30, 2002 | Women's Hockey
Wisconsin overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period to earn a 3-3 tie against Minnesota State at the Kohl Center Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers came from behind all day as Amanda Osborn kept the puck on a Maverick two-on-one and scored with a wrist shot to give MSU a 1-0 lead. Katie Hainrich and Melanie Salatino assisted the goal at 5:55.
Wisconsin responded quickly, just 19 seconds later, when Amy Vermeulen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored on a rebound. Nicole Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) fed Jackie Friesen (Regina, Saskatchewan) circling high in the Maverick zone to start the play. Friesen 's shot was stopped, but Vermeulen was in place for the second attempt.
The Mavericks regained the lead at 4:33 of the second period when Andrea Jensrud's point shot sailed past Wisconsin goaltender Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) and in for her first of the season. Devon Nichols and Osborn set up the play.
Kristina Koga made it a 3-1 contest at 6:04 when she followed up a Salatino shot for her second of the season. Koga drove to the net and chipped the loose puck under the crossbar and over MacMillan for the goal.
Friesen scored her ninth of the season and began the UW comeback early in the third period. Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) slipped the puck to Kathy Devereaux (Seaforth, Ontario) at the MSU blue line. Devereaux skated in deep and sent a pass across the crease and to Friesen, who found room past Maverick netminder Katie Beauduy on the far side. The goal, at 3:27, brought the UW within one.
At 9:52, Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Saskatchewan) completed the comeback with her sixth of the year. Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) passed to Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ontario) along the left boards and the junior found Antony open in the high slot at the edge of the left face-off circle. Antony then fired a wrist shot the found the short side and evened the contest.
Both teams had good opportunities in the last minute of regulation, but there would be no more the rest of the way. MSU nearly won the game with three seconds left when a point shot deflected off a Badger stick, but MacMillan held up her momentum enough to drag her pad and make a stop on the deflection.
MacMillan finished with 17 saves and now stands 8-4-3. Beauduy stopped 38 shots and is now 1-1-1.
The Badgers (8-4-3, 2-4-3 WCHA) play their last home game of the year tomorrow when they complete their series with the Mavericks (3-9-1, 2-6-1). The teams skate at 2:35 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
