Bulldogs Snap Badgers' Streak
November 15, 2002 | Men's Hockey
The Wisconsin Badgers (4-5-0 overall, 0-3-0 WCHA) entered Friday night's game vs. the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (3-3-3, 3-2-2) with a 10-game win streak over the `Dogs in their building. UMD snapped that streak, which dated back to Nov. 11, 1995, over seven years later with a 4-1 victory at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC).
It was the first league road game for the young Badgers, as eight of the 18 skaters were facing UMD for the first time. The Bulldogs set the tone from the opening face off as Nick Anderson capitalized on a UW turnover on the blueline and beat Scott Kabotoff (Strathcona, Alberta) just 18 seconds into the game. The next goal in the game was a fluke as Bulldog Beau Geisler's pass from the redline (to the right of Kabotoff) deflected in off the skate of Tyler Brosz, giving the home team a 2-0 lead.
The lone score for Wisconsin, coming at the 11:55 mark of the first period, was an all-freshman conversion. Deep in the Badgers' offensive zone, Adam Burish (Madison, Wis.) won the draw over to blueliner Tom Gilbert (Bloomington, Minn.) who hit classmate A.J. Degenhardt (LaCrosse, Wis.) in the slot. For Degenhardt it was his third goal in eight games.
Trailing by just one goal, Bucky put pressure on Reichmuth, outshooting UMD 12-8 in the first period. But instead of ending the first period down by a goal, the Bulldogs' Junior Lessard extended UMD's lead to 3-1 with a goal at 16:45.
The second period was scoreless as the Badgers could manage just four shots on goal and were outshot 12-4.
UMD added a power-play late in the third period (16:21), making the final score 4-1. The UW power play was 0-8 on the night, despite moving the puck well on the man advantage and getting eight of its 22 total shots during the game off the power play.
The Badgers have now lost three in a row and Saturday night look for their first league win of the year.
Kabotoff made 26 saves in net.
