A former player on the Wisconsin men's tennis team, Tomas Pitra joined the Badgers' coaching staff in 2016 as a student assistant coach. He owned a 4-8 singles record during his freshman season in 2014-15, including a mark of 2-3 in Big Ten action. Pitra spent four years playing for the Czech Republic national tennis team. During that tenure, he claimed the 2008 tennis bronze medal at the European Championship. For his accomplishment, the Czech Republic Minister of Education awarded Pitra the prestigious recognition of “successful representation of the Czech Republic in the athletic field.”
A native of Prague, Czech Republic, Pitra speaks English, Czech and Russian. Upon his state graduation in the Czech Republic, Pitra scored in the 96th percentile of the national exam. He is an agricultural business major at Wisconsin with an anticipated graduation in 2019.
Head coach Danny Westerman on Pitra
“We are extremely lucky to have Tomas as a Student-Assistant Coach. His playing career was unfortunately cut short, but he is channeling his passion for tennis towards our current Badgers. He was a fantastic tennis player and has been involved with tennis at a very high level. Our players will benefit directly from these experiences and I am excited to get his perspective on our team on a daily basis. Tomas cares deeply for this program and university, and I am very grateful that he wants to continue to contribute to our team, now as a coach.”
