Wisconsin defeats Notre Dame 4-3 in South Bend
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Wisconsin men's tennis team earned a hard-fought road victory over Notre Dame Friday night. The Badgers won the doubles point and saw wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 singles to propel them to their first victory over the Irish since 2010.
Doubles action was closely contested to start the match. Wisconsin's duo of Michael Minasyan and Ferdinand Kloesters remained undefeated with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Notre Dame took a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles to put all eyes on the No. 1 match.
The junior partnership of Oliver Olsson and Tomas Zlatohlavek fought back and forth with Notre Dame's No. 16 ranked duo. After a thrilling match Olsson and Zlatohlavek brought home the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-4) victory.
In singles play, Matthew Fullerton quickly scored Wisconsin its second point with a straight set victory over Notre Dame's Nicholas Patrick at No. 6 singles. The Irish tied the match at two-all after taking wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles.
Sophomore Patrik Meszaros continued his hot start to the season, earning a comeback victory over Notre Dame's Giuseppe Cerasuolo at No. 2 singles. The Irish tied the match once again at three-all, putting all the pressure on court three. Edouard Aubert rose to the occasion, defeating Peter Nad in a thrilling three set match at Eck Tennis Pavilion, securing the Badger win.
Wisconsin improves to 6-1 to start the spring.
Up Next: Wisconsin returns to Nielsen Tennis Stadium for two matches next weekend. The Badgers host DePaul on Friday, Feb. 13 and Purdue on Sunday, Feb. 14. First serves are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT and noon CT, respectively.
