UW opens series against MSU with 4-1 win
MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team (26-3-2, 20-3-2) worked its way to a 4-1 victory over Minnesota State at Mayo Clinic Event Center in Mankato this Friday.
The Badgers remain atop the WCHA standings with their win. UW capitalizes on special teams, scoring both a power-play and short-handed goal in the contest.
The game started fast, with few stoppages through the first fifteen minutes of the game. The Badgers began the action when Marianne Picard, who missed the last month of play with injury, scored the first goal of the game.
Picard didn't stop after that, as a few minutes later she hit a streaking Finley McCarthy on the other side of the neutral zone, facilitating a breakaway score to make it 2-0 with less than five minutes to go.
The Mavericks were able to sneak a goal of their own in the closing minutes, with the 1st period ending at 2-1.
The Badgers were able to kill the other two penalties against them in the period to enter the third up 3-1.
A hard cross-check from a Maverick shook up junior Cassie Hall early in the third. Hall recovered to play on the power play, capitalizing with the final goal of the game to make it 4-1.
Freshman Rhyah Stewart was in net for UW, saving 19 shots and allowing just one goal. The Badgers outshot the Mavericks, 44-20.
