Zach Wooten scores the game-winner in a 4-1 win
MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 7 Wisconsin men's hockey team swept No. 19 Minnesota State, winning Game 2 in a 4-1 victory on Saturday. Freshman Zach Wooten got the winner, putting the Badgers ahead for good in the second period with his first career goal.
Right after winning a draw halfway though the first, Chase Jette received a forward pass from Vasily Zelenov to get the Badgers on the board first. Jette's goal was also his first NCAA goal.
The Badgers consistently found themselves trying to stuff the puck in on the weak side of Mankato's goalie but to no avail. It was then the Mavericks who found themselves on the advantage, and with a bounce off the back boards and then Daniel Hauser's skate, tied the game at 1-1.
Wisconsin responded soon after, as Zach Wooten recorded his first NCAA goal, hitting the top shelf of the Mavericks net with under a minute left in the second frame.
To lengthen the lead, Vasily Zelenov tipped the puck in with one second remaining on a power play near the midpoint of the third period.
With the Badgers leading 3-1, the Mavericks pulled their goalie and Finn Brink hit the empty net to seal the win and the sweep.
Daniel Hauser stopped 17 shots to earn his second win of the season.
