Badgers head to New Jersey for 121st anniversary event
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The No. 16 Wisconsin men's rowing team wraps up its 2024 season and its first under head coach Beau Hoopman this Friday through Sunday at Mercer Lake at the 2024 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships.
Here are four things to know before the races.
1. WHERE THEY RANK – Wisconsin men's rowing enters the 2024 IRA National Championships with the 18th-ranked varsity eight, the 17th-ranked second varsity eight and the 14th-ranked third varsity eight. UW will race a varsity four at the event. As a team, UW sits ranked at No. 16 in the Ten Eyck Team Points ranking.
Washington ranks as the favorite in all three eights, as well as the Ten Eyck Team Points rankings. While Brown is second on the varsity eight rankings, Princeton ranks third in the varsity eight, while the same Tigers are second in the second and third varsity eights and second in the Ten Eyck rankings.
2. IRA HISTORY – Since 2000, just five schools – California, Harvard, Washington, Wisconsin and Yale – claim varsity eight national titles with the Badgers winning the 2008 Varsity Challenge Cup.
UW's last boat to earn a top-10 finish was two years ago when the 2022 second varsity eight took ninth.
The Badgers own 14 Ten Eyck Tophies all-time, second-most behind Washington's 17. UW last captured the Ten Eyck Trophy in 2002 that ended a four-year run with the trophy, and extending to five out of six between 1997 and 2002.
3 – NEW ERA – The first year of the men's rowing program under head coach Beau Hoopman concludes this weekend at the IRAs. The 2002 IRA runner-up and two-time Olympian in the men's eight (2004 – Gold; 2008 – Bronze), looks to help UW improve on its 15th-place varsity eight result and 15th-place team result from last year's event.
Hoopman and the Badgers will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Wisconsin men's rowing this fall.
