UW comeback bid falls short in high-scoring game
MADISON, Wis. — In a back and forth game Saturday night, the No. 15 Wisconsin men's hockey team (4-3-0, 4-2-0-0-1-0 Big Ten) fell, 8-5, to Arizona State (1-3-1) in the series-opening matchup at LaBahn Arena.Â
Â
Junior Brock Caufield notched a goal on one-timer of a Mathieu De St. Phalle pass just 2:35 minutes into the game to put the Badgers on the board first.Â
Â
Â
The Sun Devils retaliated at 13:51 on the clock, but sophomore Owen Lindmark raced to change that. On a penalty kill minutes later, Lindmark slipped the puck between the legs of ASU netminder Cole Brady on a short-handed breakaway with 6:54 to go to give UW back the lead.Â
Â
Â
The Sun Devils closed the first with another goal though just 40 seconds later to tie 2-2 at the end of the first.Â
Â
Arizona State posted three more in the second to grab a 5-2 lead.Â
Â
ASU went up four goals four minutes into the final frame, but the game wasn't over as the Badgers rallied in the third.Â
Â
Senior Jack Gorniak finished a Jesper Peltonen pass to start the climb.
With 11:13Â left on the clock, Lindmark sniped his second of the game and of the season, both unassisted.
Â
Â
Senior Linus Weissbach made it a one-goal game during a delayed penalty on with four minutes to go and things were looking up with the Badgers headed to a power play.
Â
Â
But the Sun Devils put an end to the rally with a short-handed 2-on-1 tally followed by an empty-netter with a minute left.Â
