Badgers in the NHL: Four to reach games played milestones
November 27, 2019 | Men's Hockey, NHL Badgers
Suter set to hit 1,100 games played this weekend
MADISON, Wis. — Of the 15 former Badgers to skate in an NHL contest this season, four are approaching major career milestones as the 2019-20 continues. Most notably, Joe Pavelski (2004-06) is currently 12 games short of 1,000 NHL games played. Also set on track for career milestones are Luke Kunin (2015-17), Jake McCabe (2011-14), and Ryan Suter (2003-04).
Â
After a slow start to the season, Pavelski and the Dallas Stars are beginning to find their stride. Recording wins seven consecutive games before falling to Chicago last night, the Stars have tied their franchise-record for consecutive wins, looking to extend their ongoing win streak in a Tuesday night match up against the Chicago Blackhawks. They have recorded points in each of their last 12 games including 11 wins and one overtime loss. Dallas currently sits at sixth in the league and second in the Western Division behind current Stanley Cup Champions St. Louis.
Â
Minnesota Wild defensemen Ryan Suter is also set to reach a career milestone this season. This former Badger is two games away from skating in 1,100 NHL games and could hit that mark on Sunday when his Wild take on Pavelski's Stars. Suter has been finding himself on the scoresheet recently, tallying seven points in his last five games, including the game-winning goal against New Jersey on Nov. 26.
Â
Also with the Wild, Luke Kunin (2015-17) needs just eight more games to reach 100 games played in the NHL. Kunin was a strong force with the Badgers as captain his sophomore season. He tallied 22 goals and 28 points in 35 games. In international play, he won gold at the 2017 World Junior Championship as captain of Team USA.
Â
Additionally, defensemen Jake McCabe (2011-14) is three games away from his 300th NHL game played, all with the Buffalo Sabres.
Â
Following an overtime win over the Minnesota Wild on Monday, goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has surpassed former Badger Curtis Joseph (1988-89) for sole possession of fifth place for most NHL career wins (455). With 454 NHL wins, Joseph is good company to Lundqvist, who is widely regarded as one of the top goaltenders in today's NHL.
Â
The Wisconsin Badgers will face Big Ten opponent Michigan at home following this weekend following Thanksgiving. The games are set for Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.
